The first-ever Festive Gala brought a real sense of energy into Galashiels on Saturday 29th of November, with thousands of people choosing to spend their day in the town centre. From morning activities to the torchlight finale, the atmosphere was lively, welcoming and full of festive spirit. Crucially, that vibrancy translated into meaningful support for local businesses, showing just how powerful well-coordinated, community-centred events can be.

Here’s a snapshot of the impact the day delivered:

  • Many local businesses enjoyed an exceptional trading day, with several reporting record takings. One hospitality business described it as their best day ever, doubling their previous highest figure from two years ago.

  • A number of retail and hospitality businesses hosted their own workshops and in-store activities, boosted by the extra footfall the Gala created. Every one of these sessions was fully subscribed, helping introduce new customers and build stronger relationships.

  • The festive market added colour and character to the event, attracting steady crowds throughout the day. Several traders sold out completely, and offering stalls to local businesses first created a strong sense of shared ownership and pride.

The day closed with a torchlight procession that lit up the streets and brought everyone together for a memorable finale. The Gala has also helped carry momentum into December, supporting our Late-Night Shopping evening and the Festive Trail as the town continued its festive celebrations.

Overall, the event demonstrated the appetite for major activity in the town centre - and the difference it can make when people, businesses and partners all pull in the same direction. It sets a hopeful foundation for the years ahead, showing what’s possible when Galashiels comes together.

A full post event evaluation is underway and will be shared in the New Year.
