With the Tour de France coming to the Scottish Borders, including Galashiels, in July 2027, the countdown is well and truly on.
BID for Galashiels is working alongside other local organisations and partners as preparations begin, with a shared focus on making sure the activity surrounding the Tour supports our community and local businesses alike.
This isn’t simply about one day in July. It’s about making the most of the build-up, creating excitement across Galashiels and ensuring the town is ready to welcome visitors and benefit from the attention that comes with hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Just how big could the opportunity be?
In 2014, Yorkshire hosted the first and second stages of the Tour de France, attracting 2.5 million spectators along the roadside.
Five years after the event, overnight visitor stays were reported to be 50% higher than in 2013, with the region having attracted worldwide attention through the success of hosting the race.
The Tour represents a massive opportunity for the Scottish Borders and, with Galashiels right at the heart of the action, a fantastic opportunity for our town too.
There’s plenty of work ahead, but we’re excited about what it could mean for Gala and will keep businesses updated as plans develop and opportunities to get involved emerge. 315 days to go!
