BID for Galashiels is pleased to share an update on the Borders Mill Memories Project, an Untangled Yarns initiative being delivered in partnership with Heriot-Watt University.

Following a recent call for expressions of interest, the project team has been delighted by the strong response from across the community. Many people have come forward keen to share their experiences and memories of the Borders textile mills - a heritage that has shaped Galashiels and the wider region for generations.

Next Stage of the Project

The project is now moving into its next phase, which involves arranging interviews with participants.

These interviews will be carried out by students from Heriot-Watt University’s Scottish Borders Campus and coordinated by Professor Dr Britta Kalkreuter. The students will be contacting participants directly to arrange suitable times.

In addition to one-to-one interviews, reminiscence group sessions are also being planned. These sessions will provide a welcoming space for shared memories and conversations, allowing stories and experiences to be explored together.

Preserving an Important Part of Our Heritage

The Borders Mill Memories Project represents an important opportunity to document and preserve a significant part of our shared heritage before these memories are lost.

The intention is to use the interviews and group discussions to produce a published book capturing these stories. Every participant will receive a copy of the finished publication.

All interviews will be informal, and every effort will be made to ensure that participants feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.

How to Get Involved

To share contact details securely and lawfully with the university team, consent is required.

Anyone who is still interested in taking part - including those who may not have responded previously - is encouraged to complete the short form below:

BID for Galashiels is proud to help share this important community project and looks forward to seeing these valuable mill memories preserved for future generations.
